The bed comes first
Mulch over a messy bed just hides the mess for a month. I clean the bed out, cut a fresh edge, then spread. The edge is what makes the whole yard look kept.
Depth matters
Standard is about three inches. Enough to hold moisture and block weeds. More than that suffocates roots and invites fungus, and piling it against trunks rots them. No mulch volcanoes here.
When to do it
Spring for the look and the weed block. Fall to protect roots through winter. Either works. I haul the mulch myself, about a yard per trip, so beds get quoted by size. Send a photo with your quote request and I can usually price it without a visit.
